VJ::MSTRKRFT + Wolfmother, Parklife Brisbane 29/09/07

Parklife Brisbane 29/09/07 - MSTRKRFT + Wolfmother
<lj-embed id="15" />

Ken and I did a couple dueling VJ spots on the night.
MSTRKRFT + Busp P were Ken's sets but after visuals for Justice got the axe we thought it might be a good idea to double up in parts.
It was a lot of fun, I can certainly see why him and Rach (Strictly + Lowdown) do things that way.
For once we were front of house and in a position to film a bit of the show.
This clip has footage from both of us.
Basically -
the Wolfmother graphics, kaleidoscopic stuff is Ken and the fire and explosive is me.
I'm not sure who bumped the camera!

Concert Visuals:: Ferry Corsten, Future Music Festival, Brisbane, 2007

<lj-embed id="2" />
So I played The Future Music Festival on the weekend.
I spent most of the day VJing without my video wall, just a couple high gloss plasma displays (great in the sunlight...) My video wall was too heavy for the stage and was moved to the main stage, that was a good thing in the end because I got to play the staggered setup later in the night for Ferry Corsten.
p.s. I remember when they invented fluorescent clothing (sad day that went on for years), I also remember when it went out of style... but the kids are cute with their "fashion"
over and out - the old bastard.

p.s if anyone actually reads this can you tell me if the Ifilm video actually works? They have the buggiest site but the best looking player and video quality. Or if someone can tell me how to compress for the "tube" and it not have it look like complete turd, please wipe my way.

4ZZZFM MARKETDAY 2006

I'll be VJing on the Main Stage.
Embarrassing interview on 4ZZZ Thursday morning around 7am:
"The state of visuals in the world today - I make pretty pictures - the future will be like fully rad -etc."

21 OCTOBER 2006

Brisbane's most unique independent broadcaster 4ZzZfm 102.1fm continue their 30th Anniversary celebrations with the announcement of Market Day 2006, to be held at the RNA Showgrounds on Saturday October 21st.

Tickets are onsale now! Only $20 for 4ZzZfm subscribers and $35 plus booking fee for the general public. Tickets are available from Skinny's Music, Rockinghorse Records, Butterbeats, Moshpit, Sunflower and Music Mania or by calling oztix on 1300 762 545 or visiting http://4zzz.oztix.com.au

More than 50 international, interstate and local bands will perform at this legendary local music festival which profiles diverse music acts from a broad range of genres, market stalls, visuals and performance art. Just some of the performers will be:

BUTTERFINGERS
Take four strong-minded men with very distinct personalities and put them in a recording studio to record a wild pastiche of rock, hip-hop, punk, funk and beats. On paper, it shouldn’t work. But not only do Brisbane band Butterfingers defy this logic, they give it a good kick it in the guts on their rapid rise to the top of the Australian music world

DREAMKILLERS
Formed in 1991 by Jobson, a culmination of remnants from two earlier Brisbane outfits: 'Mystery of Sixes' and 'Insane Hombres': Jobson taking lead position and Terry taking to the Bass. Several Guitarists were auditioned, amongst them Sid Roberts, Steven Liddle and Sean Witcher. Sean was chosen because of his tendency to play dry. Apart from an override pedal Sean used no effects.

KID 606
Venezualan born, California based Kid 606 is inspired by the best of electronica, punk, jungle, hip hop, bass, dancehall and techno, fused together with a love of pop culture. He has released critically acclaimed material on Ipecac, Mille Plateaux, Fatcat, 555 and his own Tigerbeat6 label, as well as being famous for his remixes of artists as diverse as Depeche Mode and Peaches. An inspired, iconoclastic artist, Kid 606 features at Market Day as part of his world tour.

STRANGE TENANTS
Over 20 years on, as their legendary status has grown, most people are aware that Strange Tenants were the pre-eminent Australian SKA band of the 1980s.

THE MEANIES
Seminal Melbourne rock band The Meanies formed in 1989 and established themselves as one of Australia's most enduring underground rock bands, cultivating a huge all-ages following.

RAZ BIN SAM
Raz Bin Sam has a unique style and sound which ranges from gentle lullabies to the hardest high energy ragga. Always fuelled by conscious lyrics, the charisma and originality of Raz Bin Sam stems from growing up in the war ridden streets of Israel.

THE BIRD
Bring their unique take on electronic music with their intoxicating live interpretations of drum'n'bass, breakbeats, dub, hip hop and the Asian underground. Festival favourites from Glastonbury to WOMAD and now Market Day.

JUMP TO LIGHTSPEED
Ben Ely from Regurgitator fame has staged completion on his first major solo album under the moniker JUMP 2 LIGHT SPEED.

CURSE OV DIALECT
With a diverse range of backgrounds (Maltese, Macedonian, Indian, Maori, and Pakistani), their music comes off as a non-homogenized tapestry of culture. Their political raps, razors sharp writing, unique flows, and standout production accurately represents their knowledge of hip-hop as world music and the multi-cultural climate of their homeland.

FOREIGN HEIGHTS
If you know Australian hip-hop, you know of Trey, Maya Jupiter and DJ Nick Toth. Individually they have worked to develop and cultivate their own identities, song writing, performing & recording for about 10 years each. Besides their artists expressions, they are also involved in the media and community sector.

DROP THE LIME
Born and raised in New York City, Drop the Lime (aka. L. Venezia), began recording music at an early age. Inspired by the local rave scene he had grown up in, Venezia bought a pair of turntables and began DJ'ing jungle, drum&bass, and Techno. Expect four to the floor bangers spiked with Grime and Growling Bass Techno, while he drops his soul styled vocals.

MOUNTAINS IN THE SKY
Main mountain man John Lee has an uncanny knack for cutting, splicing, playing and twitching music. Whether its collating and configuring samples from scores of second hand records or playing a dazzling array of instruments, John’s there and on the money.

TALKSHOW BOY
Is a solo electronic musician from Melbourne. His music is best described as an amalgamation of breakcore, abstract hip hop and lo-fi synthpop characterised by fast tempos, frequently shifting sequences and pastiches of samples from popular music.

Other Bands include :
    Laura
    Ponyloaf
    Sekiden
    Dubdoubt
    Wiseacre
    Transport
    The Follow
    R.A.D
    lowkey+nude
    Batrider
    Del Toro

Other guest at Market Day include local bands Six Ft Hick, the Butcher Birds, Del Toro and many more to be announced.TXQ

Seven Deadly Synths

Ponyloaf / Angelspit / Lowkey+Nude / Dizzygotheca / Errorhythm / The Mercy Dolls / Replikant

610 Ann Street Thursday Aug 17

Held in the SOOB festival club, being at Seven Deadly Synths flooded me with memories of the old 610. Other than an improved sound setup and three projectors, the venue hasn’t physically changed much, not even the notorious bathrooms. Visually however, the venue benefited from the contributions of Candy from Strangers and Richard De Souza – they lit every act, tailoring VJ sets and combining live feed imagery from off-stage cameras.

Having listened to the same Sonic Youth albums I have, the Mercy Dolls delivered hard post-punk. A solid performance, musically, needing only the refinement of vocal tones, and the cohesive visual aesthetic, that comes with experience.

Dizzygotheca’s haunting, delicate electronica is comparable to both trip-hop and ambient post-industrial. Heidi Millington’s in-tune vocals were refreshing to the ears, harshly contrasted by off-beat distorted drum samples.

Next, the first of choreographer Claire Marshall’s Namco Disco dance pieces reintroduce the ‘Pop and Lock’, to a soundtrack of retro electro-disco.

Having heard Lowkey+Nude on MySpace, I expected a set of simplistic and boring electro-house. But, through the disco shone moments of genius, blending eighties sounds with EFL-accented euro-clubber lyrics.

The second, and last, of Claire Marshall’s Namco Disco pieces amazed the lazy goth crowd with the possibilities of human movement, to the Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams.

Riff-driven Sydney industrial band, Angelspit, yelled 90’s cyberpunk rhetoric in tandem to a backing track of hard-rock industrial and mechanical samples. Tainted slightly by feedback, they struck a balance between substance driven performance and advertising for their online cyber-dread extension business.

Supported by a loyal group of locals, Ponyloaf headlined. Their electronic post-punk demanded movement, injecting serious energy into 610.

Ambient post-industrial drones, mixed seamlessly with brutal IDM, Errorhythm stood out as the highlight. Punters didn’t know whether to mosh, dance, or stroke their goatees, as Tomaz and Kemi massaged their eardrums with digital signal processing.

Replikant’s 90s style goth electronica wrapped up the night, with dark ambience, analog and FM synths, and industrial dance beats.

SEAN MARTIN DOYLE
Rave Magazine

Thanks Honey pokemonprincess for the photo!

As the sun sank below the tree-scape and the darkness crept in, a similar darkness fell over the boiler room, Mr. James (Aphex Twin) and Mr. Vibrant had entered the building. Imminent doom, apocalypse, whatever you want to call it, either way the whole Boiler Room was assuming the position and bracing for impact.

For the most of it, it was like being set on fire and then extinguished every five minutes ala Ren and Stimpy. Armed with two notebooks and Fx’s they remixed and sampled on the fly creating a mash of electronica. Swinging from soothing ambient atmospherics to mutant breaks, trancey licks then back to 140 bpm stormers. The wall of visuals from a multitude of sources and live cameras further enhanced the sinister feel with images of alien style silhouettes, fire, skulls, destruction and other abstracts coupled with the lighting created a very surreal atmosphere.

The climax came all too quickly with the turning of the “music to f*ck with” dial to “DnB/Jungle”, releasing Hulk styled devil dogs to tear thru Jungle classics like the seminal “Pacman” by Ed Rush & Optical, creating a destructive industrial Squarepusher sound that saw many of the “Go/Groove” youngsters slowing to a swagger and clutching their heads.

Review and images, 3,7,8 courtesy of the_pezman
